Name… Naomi Wallen
Where are you based/distance willing to travel?
I am based on the Cambridgeshire/Hertfordshire border and I travel to clients within those counties.
What do you do?
I run a dance school offering a range of classes to children and adults including Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and Linedancing. We use Makaton sign language with pre-schoolers as a way to introduce Ballet. I also use dance in a teambuilding workshop for corporate bodies. Part of the DanceMatters’ family includes wedding couples. I enjoy working with couples to help them create their perfect first dance. Funny… romantic… it’s their choice!
What experience do you have?
I have been teaching dance for 20 years now. I’m the luckiest girl alive; I get to eat, sleep, breathe dance… and then people pay me!
What inspired you to start up your company?
Being freelance has been a thrill! It’s been exciting to create new branches of the service we offer and meet new people. I believe that everybody should dance; even if its just a little. It’s a wonderful way to express joy!
What’s the best bit about your job?
That’s easy to answer – THE DANCERS! It doesn’t matter if it’s a nervous wedding couple, a tiny 2 year old pretending to be a cat, or a line dancer enjoying their retirement; I haven’t met a dancer I didn’t like!
Can you teach anyone to dance?
Absolutely! People don’t actually have two left feet; they’re just nervous. We break down steps into simple sections and find ways to remember them. With the right encouragement, support and practice, every couple can dance a dream.
How long does it teach a couple to dance?
That depends on the couple and what they’d like to create. If you would like just a few ideas for your dance and some confidence, most couples book 2 sessions (1 of 90mins and 1 of 60mins). If the couple wants a whole choreographed dance, they will need a minimum of 5 sessions of 60mins each.
Your favourite client experience…
I always love that special moment when a couple suddenly ‘gets it’ and relaxes. The sessions are always filled with laughter and sometimes a few tears. A couple will sometimes catch themselves dancing their wedding dance and it’s quite an emotional moment.
Your best tip for Brides and Grooms…
That’s simple. DONT WORRY! Everybody at your wedding is there because they love you and want you to have a wonderful day. They wont care if you mess up a step or two, so neither should you. Enjoy practising your dance together – it should be a joy, not a chore. Choose a song you both love and can imagine dancing to at your Golden Wedding Anniversary party.
Do you have any special offers for couples looking to learn their first dance?
Yes. Normally, if couples book 2 sessions that costs £110 in total. If the couple wants a whole choreographed dance, 5 sessions costs £250 in total. If couples book before Jan 31st and quote “LLLM” they will receive a 10% discount. These figures do not include the cost of hall hire, if applicable.
